Auto Transmission: The Basics

by | May 23, 2017 | Automotive

The transmission is one of the most complex parts of a vehicle, if not the most complex. It is connected to the engine, and it distributes power from that engine to the wheels of the car. It also keeps the RPM regulated, so that your engine runs as it should. Auto transmission parts should last for many years, but they can go bad. This is a very expensive fix, but a necessary one.

Transmissions Have Gears

Even if you don’t have a manual car, your transmission still has gears. If you are in first gear, for instance, the engine will turn much more quickly when compared to the wheels. In a higher gear, however, that is the opposite. There is also a neutral position on a transmission. This will disconnect the engine from the wheels, which means you can move the car without the wheels staying in place.

Types of Transmissions

There are two types of transmissions: automatic transmissions and standard transmissions. There are also both front and rear-wheel drive transmissions. The transmission in a rear-wheel drive car is mounted at the back of the car’s engine, for instance.

Problems With Your Transmission?

In most cases, if you have trouble with your transmission you will take it to an auto repair shop. Again, this is a very expensive auto repair, that might even cost more than the car is worth. If the cost of a transmission repair is too much, you might want to look into asking about a transmission rebuild. You can usually save several hundreds of dollars by choosing this option. If you know someone who works on cars, they might even be able to offer this service to you if they are skilled enough. Sometimes, you can even buy the parts for them, and they will do the labor…for a fee, of course. It’s still a very difficult job.
